Literacy for All:

A Community of Practice for Junior/Senior High Teachers

of Students with Significant Disabilities

A community of practice is a group of people who share a common concern for something they do and a commitment to learn how to do it better by interacting and collaborating regularly.

Alberta Regional Professional Learning Consortia (through the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortia), in collaboration with Alberta Education is hosting a one-year community of practice for teachers from grades 7 to 12 who support students with significant disabilities. Participants will collaborate in an online environment from September 2013 to June 2014.

The goal of this community of practice is to:

  • Identify resources and strategies to support the literacy learning of junior/senior high students with significant disabilities

This project will build on the work of the 2011- 2013 Literacy for All Communities of Practice. To learn more about these projects, visit: http://abliteracyforall.wikispaces.com

Commitment by participants:

  • Participating in a one-day face-to-face orientation session in October (travel and sub costs to be covered by project)

  • Using new resources and strategies in your classroom and reflecting on their effectiveness

  • Participating in four one-hour online meetings/webinars throughout the school year to share your experiences, learn new strategies and network with other participants

  • Contributing to discussion and the development of content on a dedicated project website

  • Responding to two online surveys and sharing experiences about your students’ experiences with these resources

  • Participating in a one-day follow-up session in May/June 2014 to share success stories (travel and sub costs to be covered by project)
